Stranger Than Heaven Hands-On Splits Brawls and Stage Shows

A 50-year crime saga where you guard with each arm separately, then still have to make the confetti budget work.

The short version

RGG Studio's Stranger Than Heaven controls Makoto Daito's left and right sides independently in combat and has him running live stage shows for profit, per a PlayStation Blog hands-on. It launches January 15, 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

RGG Studio's Stranger Than Heaven controls protagonist Makoto Daito's left and right sides independently in combat and puts him in charge of live stage shows, according to a hands-on report from PlayStation Blog Japan. The game launches January 15, 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and the preview covered four chapters spanning 1915 to 1943.

Sachie Kobari played the Prologue and the Kokura, Kure and Minami chapters at a press preview, describing the fighting on the PlayStation Blog as "Fists clashing, bones crunching—it's combat at its most visceral." From the studio behind Like a Dragon, the brawling was expected. The light board was not.

The story follows Daito across 50 years, opening in 1915 San Francisco before moving through Kokura in Fukuoka, Kure in Hiroshima in 1929 and Minami in Osaka in 1943. Our look at the Kokura story trailer covered how that opening chapter sets him up.

The details

  • Release: January 15, 2027
  • Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam, Microsoft Store), plus Game Pass
  • Developer / publisher: RGG Studio / Sega
  • Previewed: Prologue (San Francisco, 1915), Kokura, Kure (1929), Minami (1943)
  • Cast: Tupac Shakur appears as a character named Amaru, announced alongside the date in June

How does the split-body combat work?

The shoulder buttons and triggers control Daito's left and right sides separately, so fights come down to alternating strikes and guarding toward incoming hits. One-handed weapons are quick but leave the off hand throwing weaker bare-fist punches, while a sledgehammer hits hard, recovers slowly and, per the report, holds up better in group fights. Kure's Arena adds rematches with constraints like "No Weapons" for bigger rewards, and smaller ones if you break the rule.

Producer Hiroyuki Sakamoto said Daito's health and spirit grow through everyday activity such as walking around town or reading the newspaper. Weapon proficiency rises with use, and new moves come from minigames and sub-stories. It may be the first game where the morning paper counts as a workout.

What does the show business side involve?

In 1943 Minami, Daito manages promotions, composes music and mounts live shows that earn income and tie into the story. Songs start as "Inspiration," sounds gathered around the city and mid-fight, which a composer turns into tracks with swappable arrangements. Sakamoto said feeding a stray dog can make it bark and unlock a sound, some prompts only appear at night, and finished tracks can be performed in other eras and locations.

Every show has a revenue target. Players pick singers, musicians and effects like fog or confetti while weighing performer skill against operating costs, then run the lighting themselves through on-screen prompts. The report says success leans on pre-show planning more than reflexes.

Daito spends half a century fighting with both hands, and apparently running the lights with whatever's left.
