SEGA and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio have revealed the first major look at the story behind STRANGER THAN HEAVEN, releasing a trailer focused on the opening chapter of protagonist Makoto Daito’s journey. Titled the "Act 1: Kokura Story Trailer," the video outlines how Daito arrives in Japan and attempts to build a life from scratch, proving once again that RGG Studio characters rarely enjoy a calm commute.

According to SEGA, the preview represents the first in a sequential series of character-focused videos that will trace Daito’s life across the game’s various cities. The initial chapter establishes a backstory that stretches across oceans before landing him in the harsh realities of Kokura.
Before arriving in Japan, Daito endures persecution in America and stows away on a merchant ship named the Orpheus—described in the trailer as a "ghost ship." During the voyage, he meets Yu Shinjo, a fellow stowaway who eventually becomes his best friend. Upon reaching Kokura, the pair encounter a difficult environment, prompting Daito to work as a showman to build the foundation he needs to survive.
The details
The new footage highlights the turning points that force Daito to adapt to his new surroundings. After stowing away to escape persecution, his early days in Kokura revolve around meeting key locals, navigating personal hardship, and ultimately establishing himself as a showman to carve out a place in Japanese society.
SEGA confirmed that additional videos focusing on Daito’s experiences in other featured cities will be released sequentially in the future.
Rather than presenting Daito's narrative in a single overview, RGG Studio is staggering its lore updates by geographic location. Each upcoming video will focus on a specific city from the game, detailing the regional characters and events that intersect with Daito's rise.
Character-driven origin stories are a staple of RGG Studio's approach to action-adventure games, and STRANGER THAN HEAVEN is building its narrative structure around Daito's gradual transformation across multiple regions. By breaking the story into city-specific updates, SEGA is establishing the narrative scope early, even as technical specifics like release platforms and launch timing remain unconfirmed.
