The release brings together the base strategy game and its major expansions under a single modernized roof, SEGA said. For players who spent the last decade squinting at tiny text on high-resolution displays, the update aims to resolve the practical hurdles of playing an older PC game on contemporary rigs.

The details

  • Release date: October 13
  • Key upgrades: 64-bit architecture, 1440p and 4K UI scaling, and ultrawide monitor compatibility
  • Content included: Three standalone campaigns and more than 50 newly playable factions
  • Exclusions: The Blood Pack is not included in the bundle

What is in the package

The Complete Edition covers over 700 years of historical campaigns, according to the official announcement. This includes the base Sengoku Jidai campaign, the Genpei War in Rise of the Samurai, and the Boshin War in Fall of the Samurai. Beyond the campaigns, the release introduces a list of technical updates designed to keep the game running on contemporary setups.

Alongside the 64-bit upgrade and 4K UI scaling, the new edition adds integrated Mod.io support, modernized controls, and full Japanese and Chinese localization for both voice and text. Visual updates include improved lighting and shadows, alongside colorblind accessibility options.

How the upgrade works

For those who already own the original game, the transition is not a standard full-price purchase. Existing owners of Total War: SHOGUN 2 will receive the legacy DLC from the original game at no extra cost, the studio confirmed. Additionally, current owners will be eligible for a time-limited 75% loyalty discount on the new Complete Edition.

According to the developers, further details regarding regional pricing, specific eligibility criteria, and purchasing options will be hosted in the official Total War FAQ. Notably, the Blood Pack DLC will not be included in this Complete Edition release.

Why it matters

Classic PC games often suffer from a slow fade as operating systems and monitor resolutions march forward, leaving older software struggling to scale or run reliably on modern hardware. By updating a well-regarded entry to a 64-bit architecture with modern UI support, the studio extends the shelf life of its back catalog without requiring players to rely on community-made workarounds.
