Ocarina of Time / Guide / Walkthrough
Step 1 of 2
Gear up as a kid: 40 Rupees for the Deku Shield, the Kokiri Sword from the boulder trial, then past Mido to the Great Deku Tree.
Updated Nov 6, 2026. Unofficial guide by Nexzy.
Reward:
Kokiri Sword, Deku Shield
Link wakes up with a fairy, a summons from the Great Deku Tree and nothing to fight with. Mido won't let him pass until he's carrying a sword and a shield, so this step is all about gearing up.
| Item | Where | How |
|---|---|---|
| Deku Shield | Kokiri Shop | Buy it for 40 Rupees |
| Kokiri Sword | Chest past the Training Ground tunnel | Beat the rolling boulder trial |
| Deku Stick | Path to the Great Deku Tree | Cut down a Deku Baba |
New in the remake: a free camera on the right stick, and a dedicated jump button (X). Fall in the water? Swim to the edge and Link climbs out on his own.
Navi drags Link out of a strange dream about a castle, a fleeing girl and a rider on a black horse. Walk out of the treehouse (A at the door), look around with the camera, then climb down and talk to Saria. She's thrilled you finally have a fairy and points you to the Great Deku Tree.
The Great Deku Tree's grove is down the road past the big cave by the water. Hop the stepping stones with X to stay dry. Mido is waiting at the entrance and won't move until you have a sword and a shield. Shield first.
Jump back over the water and keep right. The Kokiri girl on the treehouse teaches targeting: hold ZL and Navi locks on, so you can talk to people from a distance with A. The Kokiri Shop sells the shield for 40 Rupees, and the forest has more than enough hidden around it.
Rupees lying in the open or in chests are one-time. Grass, pots, rocks and enemies refill every time you come back, so cut grass if you're a few short.
Buy the Deku Shield at the shop. Deku Sticks and Deku Nuts are on sale too, but you'll find both for free soon. The girl in the shop explains raising the shield while you target.
The kid outside Mido's House (northwest) sends you to the Training Ground, up the hill to the south. On the way, the House of the Three Brothers has quick tips on the menu, the map and items.
At the Training Ground, talk to the Kokiri boy and practice on the scarecrows: strafe, hop and backflip while targeting. Clear it and he tells you where the sword is hidden.
Show Mido your sword and shield. He's speechless and steps aside. In the tunnel to the Great Deku Tree you meet your first real enemy, a Deku Baba: target it with ZL and cut the stem. It drops a Deku Stick.
A Deku Stick is a breakable weapon in a pinch, and it carries fire from one torch to another. You'll need that inside the Great Deku Tree.
