27 years ago today, the GDI and Nod war raged on PC with Tiberian Sun's German launch.
Step back to August 20, 1999. Twenty-seven years ago today, the conflict between the Global Defense Initiative and the Brotherhood of Nod found a new battleground on Windows PCs, specifically launching in Germany. This was the arrival of Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun.
This sequel to the wildly popular Command & Conquer brought players back to the Tiberium-scarred Earth, some time after the original conflict. The story picked up with a renewed threat from Nod, now led by a resurrected Kane, and a new, more potent strain of Tiberium. The game expanded on the established real-time strategy formula, introducing new units, more elaborate cutscenes featuring live actors, and a persistent, mutated world that felt more lived-in, or perhaps more accurately, more decayed, than its predecessor. It was a time when a CD-ROM drive was still a point of pride and loading screens were an accepted part of the gaming ritual. The box itself, a hefty piece of plastic, promised hours of strategic warfare. For many, this was the next evolution in the RTS genre, a chance to dive deeper into a lore that had captivated players worldwide.
