Step back to 2002. The air, at least for PC gamers in the United States, was thick with the promise of conquest. On August 20th of that year, Creative Assembly's ambitious strategy title, Medieval: Total War, landed on Windows platforms.

WHY IT STILL MATTERS

This wasn't just another real-time battle simulator. Medieval: Total War offered a sweeping campaign map where players took the reins of one of Europe's great medieval factions. You'd manage provinces, conduct diplomacy, build armies, and then, when the inevitable clash came, dive into massive, real-time battles that could feature thousands of units on screen. It was a game of grand strategy and visceral combat, all wrapped in the rich tapestry of the medieval period. The game built upon the foundations of its predecessor, Shogun: Total War, but expanded the scope dramatically, introducing more complex diplomacy and a deeper campaign experience. For its time, the sheer scale of the battles and the depth of the strategic layer were truly something to behold, a digital chessboard where kings and kingdoms rose and fell.

It's a far cry from the quick digital downloads we see today; this was a game you might have found in a box, perhaps with a hefty manual and a disc or two, ready to occupy your hard drive for weeks, if not months.
