Square Enix has handed the black wing of Sephiroth to a new voice actor for the climax of the remake trilogy. Travis Willingham is officially stepping into the role of the franchise's premier villain for Final Fantasy VII Revelation, taking over for previous actor Tyler Hoechlin, who had to step down from the project.
"There’s nothing more dangerous than the villain that doesn’t need to shout to be heard," Willingham said regarding his approach to taking over the iconic antagonist.
The announcement, delivered during the game's New York Comic Con panel on October 8, 2026, also confirmed another high-profile addition to the voice booth. Fellow Critical Role star Marisha Ray has joined the cast to play "Polydroid Shiva," a digitized, low-fidelity version of the classic ice summon who manages the Gold Saucer's snowboarding minigame. Apparently, even ancient, god-like elemental entities aren't exempt from working customer service at an amusement park.
According to a gameplay clip shown at the panel, a mishap at the amusement park forces Vincent Valentine—voiced by Ray's real-life husband Matt Mercer—to step in, leading to a series of exchanges between the two.
The upcoming title serves as the final chapter of Square Enix's ambitious remake project, balancing new narrative paths with the legacy of the original. Final Fantasy VII Revelation is scheduled for release in Spring 2027, specifically April 8, 2027, which is after the original game's 30th anniversary on January 31, 2027.
The details
Swapping out the voice of a legendary villain this late in a trilogy is a bold pivot, but bringing in a voice-acting veteran who specializes in quiet menace is one way to keep the threat level high.
