On the podcast, Sports Interactive senior features manager Ant Farley — 18 years at the studio — outlined how the team built on last year's massive engine shift. "The FM26 release was our first game in the Unity engine that required everything to be designed and built from the ground up," Farley said, with FM27 building on that foundation to address player feedback.
The sim's scale remains absurd: a research-built database of players and staff covering over a million human beings, from superstars to lower-tier prospects. Newcomers can still delegate duties like training to AI staff while keeping transfers and tactics for themselves.
The details
After FM26's structural rebuild, FM27 is a feedback release focused on navigation and flow. Players felt the last entry boxed them into their own club, so the UI work is about reducing clicks and restoring the rabbit holes — starting at your local club and ending up scouting second-tier talent on the other side of the globe. Club screens now surface a team's past, present, and future at a glance, and a new Tactical Tweaks button applies multiple touchline changes at once, like telling the whole side to play with more urgency.
The two versions diverge on pace: console is more streamlined, with visual information and "pivotal moments" for drastic choices, while PC keeps the deeper mode options and heavier numerical analysis.
The influence runs both ways. Farley cites Brighton and Brentford as clubs that won with the data-first squad building FM has simulated for decades; manager Will Still has credited the game with starting his career, and Antoine Griezmann and Ousmane Dembélé are, in Farley's words, very vocal FM fans. FM26 carried the FIFA World Cup license for the first time, and FM27 keeps building on that alignment.
Day-one Game Pass removes the entry barrier for the management-curious — and the free preview week means the addiction can start before the game technically exists.
