MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is getting its first post-launch roster addition in the form of Phoenix Cyclops on November 2, according to producer Takeshi Yamanaka. Rather than opting for the standard blue-and-yellow optic blast machine, the studio is leaning into the character's more destructive, cosmic era. Because why settle for punchy laser eyes when you can set the entire screen on fire?
"Early in development, Cyclops was one of the leading candidates to join the roster," Yamanaka said, noting that the team wanted to present a style that felt different from the leader's long history in fighting games.
For players who haven't jumped in yet, the announcement coincides with the game's first-ever PlayStation Store sale today. PlayStation Plus subscribers can also access a new 3-hour Game Trial starting today.
The details
Phoenix Cyclops functions as an all-rounder with versatile long-range Optic Blasts and close-range strikes. However, his real gimmick lies in the cosmic energy he wields. Using his basic optic attacks charges "Solar Shards" on screen. Once you collect four Solar Shards, Cyclops transforms into his Dark Phoenix form.
This temporary state offers a massive power boost, but it comes with a catch: it steadily drains your own health. It's the digital equivalent of a gym membership in February—incredible potential, but it hurts the longer you try to maintain it.
For purists who might find the fiery redesign a bit too radical, the November 2 update will also offer "Classic" and "Legacy" DLC costumes separately, returning Scott Summers to his more familiar threads.
Launching a major character like Cyclops with a complete mechanical overhaul is a gamble for a fighting game. By offering classic costumes alongside a highly experimental, high-risk transformation mechanic, Arc System Works is trying to satisfy both casual comic fans and competitive players who want deep, high-stakes system mechanics to master.
