EA Sports Madden NFL 27 and MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls led the PlayStation 5 download charts in the US and Canada for August 2026, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced on Friday, September 4, 2026. In a month often marked by late-summer lulls, players instead focused on virtual touchdowns and superhero confrontations.

The official rankings, published by Sony Content Communication Specialist O'Dell Harmon Jr. on the PlayStation Blog, outline the top digital purchases across PS5, PS4, PS VR2, and free-to-play formats. In Europe, Call of Duty: Black Ops II continues to hold the top spot on the PS5 chart, with the shooter franchise maintaining its appeal even as newer titles vie for attention.
While players kept busy downloading digital software, Sony continued to expand its physical offerings, recently announcing its LEGO PlayStation retro console set to mark three decades of hardware history. Meanwhile, those looking ahead to future releases can already see Sony's preparation of the hardware landscape with limited-edition GTA 6 DualSense controllers on the horizon.
The details
While football and fighting dominated the domestic PS5 space, the free-to-play arena showed consistency across borders. Fortnite and Roblox occupied the top two spots in both North America and Europe, with the free-to-play release of Once Human taking third place.
On the virtual reality front, the US and European charts shared similarities, though with different leaders. I Am Cat topped the PS VR2 downloads in both the US/Canada and Europe, followed by Beat Saber and Bootstrap Island in Europe, and Synapse and Bootstrap Island in the US and Canada.
The PlayStation 4 charts featured a different mix of titles. In the US and Canada, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands led the downloads, followed by Red Dead Redemption 2 and Gang Beasts. Across the Atlantic, European PS4 players preferred Assassin's Creed Odyssey, with Red Dead Redemption 2 and Ghost Recon Wildlands completing their top three.
Whether upgrading or downloading from scratch, the month's metrics underscore the divide between players pursuing new roster updates and those committed to established multiplayer hubs.
