4A Games has released a free next-gen update for Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux on Xbox Series X|S, announced via Xbox Wire, adding true 4K at 60fps, an upscaled 4K 120fps mode, and a visual overhaul — three months before the series' next chapter, Metro 2039, arrives February 4, 2027.
The team tuned every change to "authentically preserve the look and feel of the original games," wrote Metro franchise executive producer John Bloch, noting that more than 50 million players have explored the series since Metro 2033 launched in 2010.
The details
Players choose between native 4K at 60fps or upscaled 4K at 120fps, backed by 4A TSR upscaling plus refreshed textures, animation, and a reworked lighting and shadow system built for the Metro's darkest corners. The Xbox controller's Impulse Triggers now add tactile feedback to gunfire, and Xbox Play Anywhere means one purchase covers supported Xbox hardware — including the Xbox Ally handhelds, which get dedicated optimization. Returning players should note one housekeeping catch: previous save files don't transfer, so it's a fresh descent.
The timing lines up neatly with Metro 2039's February 4 launch, and the price does the rest: the Metro Redux Bundle is currently $4.49 on the Xbox Store, roughly 85% off its $29.99 list price. For anyone who skipped the originals, that's two remastered shooters for less than a sandwich ahead of the sequel.
Next-gen patches have become routine library maintenance, but 120fps modes for games that started life in the Xbox 360 era are still rare. Pairing a free upgrade with a deep bundle discount keeps 4A's back catalog alive and accessible right as the franchise gears up for its next entry.
Will you return to Metro Redux for the 120fps Xbox update?
