Defeating bosses in Phantom Blade Zero steals their weaponry, turning hard-won victories into distinct combat styles and key tools for unlocking blocked paths across the Wulin.
The short version
S-Game's action-RPG Phantom Blade Zero relies on boss encounters rather than merchants or chest loot to supply its arsenal. Defeating main bosses yields specialized weapons and tools that unlock new combat combos and hidden environmental paths.

Developer S-Game has detailed how weapons and combat work in Phantom Blade Zero, confirming that most of your arsenal is claimed directly from defeated bosses rather than bought from merchants or pulled from chests, per the PlayStation Blog. The breakdown landed one day before the game's October 29 release on PlayStation 5.

Rather than vendor loops, the Wulin-set action-RPG ties progression to its fights. Playing as Soul in a dark "Kungfupunk" world, beating specific martial artists hands you weapons that double as keys to previously unreachable areas.
The details
Combat revolves around the Sha-Chi meter. Blocking eats yours; run dry and Soul staggers open. Perfect parries, dodges, and connecting attacks chew through the opponent's instead, breaking their defenses. Swapping between your two equipped weapons instantly refills the meter — a mechanical nudge that insists you keep chaining strikes rather than turtling. DualSense haptics carry the force of clashing blades, and limited-use Phantom Edge secondary weapons round out the kit.
Boss drops carry the movesets you just survived. Felling Hua, Deadly Betrothed yields her Scarlet Wraithblade, which summons enemy-slowing spider lilies as you complete combos — the same trick she used on you. The dual-wielded White Serpent and Crimson Viper each have their own combo and can be mixed for different effects.
That gear is also an environmental key: certain paths stay blocked until a specific Phantom Edge weapon can smash the barrier or grapple you up a ledge, Metroidvania-style. Side paths hide Blue Memory Flowers that unlock stories of the past — collect a story's full set and Soul's maximum health rises.
The boss lineup ranges from Jing Ye, The Outlaw — who fights on horseback, throws dirt in your eyes, and switches to a spiked shield and a self-healing greatsword once unhorsed — to the Gold-Masked One, played by martial arts legend Donnie Yen in the illusory realm of the Discordance, complete with unblockable throws.
Tying progression to boss drops removes the shop loop entirely: you adapt to an opponent's style, then adopt it. And since the same weapons gate the map, every victory in Phantom Blade Zero opens both a new way to fight and a new place to go — starting October 29.
What sounds most appealing about Phantom Blade Zero's boss gear system?
