Sony Unveils PS5 Prism Collection with See-Through Controllers and Console Covers

Sony has revealed the PS5 Prism Collection, a set of transparent DualSense controllers and console covers in three colors, announced October 28 on the PlayStation Blog. Pre-orders open November 10 ahead of a February 4, 2027 launch, bringing late-1990s plastic aesthetics into the current generation at $84.99 (£74.99) per controller and $74.99 (£64.99) per console cover.

The collection comes in Flare Orange, Emerald Green, and Graphite Gray, each with a high-gloss finish. Per Sony's Color, Material, and Finish design team, the project taps hardware nostalgia while showing off the tech inside the shell.

"We know how much our fans have been looking forward to the return of transparent controllers," design team member Leo Cardoso said, adding the goal was to revive the "iconic see-through trend of the late '90s" in a modern way.

The details

  • Products: transparent DualSense controllers ($84.99 / £74.99) and PS5 console covers ($74.99 / £64.99)
  • Colors: Flare Orange, Emerald Green, Graphite Gray
  • Dates: pre-orders November 10; launch starting February 4, 2027
  • Where: controllers sold globally; console covers exclusively via direct.playstation.com where available, limited retail elsewhere

How the designs work

The high-gloss clear finish runs across the back of each controller, leaving the internals visible, while a metallic finish on the central housing ties the clear shell to the standard PS5 look. Design team member Satoshi Aoyagi says the colors were chosen for how light moves through the translucent layers: Flare Orange shifts toward a rosy hue where the materials overlap, Emerald Green is a deep hunter green that gains depth from its transparency, and Graphite Gray lands as a cool storm gray. All three extend across the matching console covers.

Translucent shells were everywhere in the late '90s before two decades of solid matte slates buried the look. Sony pricing its comeback at a premium suggests the nostalgia market has been doing its homework — this time you can see exactly what you paid for.
