A new filing points to system-level sound analysis that triggers controller buzzes, touchpad lights, and visual cues before the audio even hits your speakers.
The short version
Sony has filed a patent titled "Audio Processing System and Method" detailing a feature that analyzes game sound in real time to trigger controller haptics, touchpad lighting, and visual cues before the audio actually plays.

Who it's for
Sony has detailed a new feedback system in a patent titled "Audio Processing System and Method," published on Patentscope and spotted by Insider Gaming. The filing describes analyzing and classifying game audio before it is output, then signaling it through controller haptics, LEDs around the touchpad that indicate where a sound is coming from, and on-screen icons, shapes, or words.
The pre-playback timing is the point. Per the filing, a sound's relevant properties may only become apparent during playback — "too late to provide a visual indication" — so the system classifies each sound ahead of output, sorting ambient noise from cues that matter, like the loud hit after a jump scare or an approaching enemy.
Rather than relying on developers to code tactile triggers into every release, the patent describes the operating system or a helper application doing the monitoring. That would let the hardware generate feedback for legacy games whose code is fixed and can't easily be adapted, though some older titles might get visual indicators without vibration. The visual side scales with the audio: a sound's volume can change an on-screen element's color, transparency, or brightness, a fast ramp-up can push brightness and saturation, and detected voices can trigger their own graphic. Not every sound fires every cue.
The details
Patent filings are research, not product commitments — but between this and Sony's other haptics filings, the company is clearly thinking about what a controller should tell you that your speakers can't.
Would you want system-level haptics automatically applied to older games?
