Walmart Cancels Limited Edition Zelda Switch 2 Pre-Orders One Day Before Delivery

An inventory allocation issue leaves limited-edition hardware buyers empty-handed hours before launch, while third-party marketplace listings spike in price.

The short version

Walmart cancelled customer pre-orders for the limited edition Zelda Switch 2 console 24 hours before scheduled arrival after overselling inventory. Nintendo has confirmed that official restocks are in production to address the supply shortage.

Walmart has cancelled a batch of limited edition Zelda-themed Switch 2 pre-orders roughly 24 hours before their scheduled delivery, per Nintendo Life and Kotaku. The console — out this week ahead of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake's November 5 launch — was supposed to be the locked-in part of launch day. The cancellation emails had other plans.

Multiple shoppers reported notices saying the item was out of stock despite active pre-orders placed through Walmart's own digital channels, and Walmart reportedly told at least one customer it had "oversold" its allocation, per a Bluesky post shared by an affected buyer. Nobody was charged for unfulfilled units, but the timing leaves buyers hunting hardware on the eve of release.

Shortly after the cancellations landed, listings for the console began appearing on Walmart's website at inflated prices — which, as Kotaku notes, come from third-party marketplace sellers using Walmart's platform rather than the retailer's own stock. The optics of cancellation emails followed by marked-up listings on the same storefront were not lost on anyone.

The details

  • The hardware: the limited edition Zelda-themed Switch 2, out this week; the Ocarina of Time remake follows November 5
  • Cancellation notice: sent about 24 hours before expected delivery; no charges applied
  • Walmart's reported explanation: pre-orders oversold against its allocation
  • Supply outlook: Nintendo has repeatedly said restocks are coming; Australia's official Nintendo Store received fresh stock this week (per Vooks.net), and Nintendo Life's stock guide lists availability via Smyths in the UK

Pre-orders exist to remove launch-day guesswork, which is what makes a last-minute cancellation on a limited run sting: affected buyers get pushed back into the open market at the exact moment supply is tightest. With production waves still moving, the realistic play is official restocks — the marketplace markups are counting on you not waiting.

If your pre-order were cancelled 24 hours before launch, what would you do?
