Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember Confirms 2027 Release and Launches Limited-Time Demo

A return to Koei Tecmo's demon-plagued Three Kingdoms is on the books for next year, but players can try out the newly evolved combat systems today.

The short version

Koei Tecmo's dark fantasy action-RPG *Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember* is scheduled to launch on March 4, 2027. To bridge the gap, a limited-time Alpha Demo is playable on PlayStation 5 from September 15 until September 30, 2026.

Watch

Koei Tecmo Games has scheduled the launch of Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember for March 4, 2027, producer Masakazu Hirayama announced on Tuesday. Because a release date that far out is a lot to ask of a player's short-term memory, the studio has also launched a limited-time Alpha Demo today on PlayStation 5, which will remain active until September 30, 2026. Players who pre-order before March 4, 2027, will receive the Creator Goddess Garb set as a bonus.

Hirayama confirmed that the demo offers a playable slice of the Changban stage, blending acrobatic martial arts with the series' signature brand of historical demon-slaying. Players who manage to clear the demo's challenges will get an early piece of equipment to carry over when the retail version eventually arrives.

The original game carved out its niche by turning ancient China into a supernatural meat grinder. This sequel appears to double down on that premise, expanding the battlefield into wider, open maps and giving players the tactical freedom to capture bases, set traps, or simply convince enemy generals to switch sides.

The details

  • Release date: March 4, 2027
  • Demo window: September 15 to September 30, 2026
  • Platform: PlayStation 5
  • Demo reward: Fledgling Phoenix Helmet (unlocked by defeating the boss Wuzhiqi)

Evolving the supernatural battlefield

Combat in Wings of Ember remains a tense balancing act between offense and defense, built around the core Deflect mechanic that nullifies and redirects incoming attacks. This time, Koei Tecmo is introducing "Insight Skills," which let players slam airborne enemies into the dirt or shove aggressive targets into solid walls. It is an addition that should make the inevitable boss-fight beatdowns feel slightly more interactive.

The battlefields themselves are shifting from linear paths to wider, open fields. Famous historical sites like Changban and the Red Cliffs are depicted as sprawling zones filled with enemy strongholds and demonic lairs. According to Koei Tecmo, players can approach these challenges with multiple strategies, whether that means flanking enemy lines, setting traps, or recruiting opposing generals to do the heavy lifting. It is a busy time for fans of stylish combat on the console, particularly with other high-profile action titles like Muramasa: Revenant Blades also landing in early 2027.

Demons, co-op, and pre-orders

Inside the campaign, an original story unfolds featuring immortality elixirs, classical literature beasts, and legendary historical warriors. Despite the "2" in the title, Koei Tecmo states the story is designed to be newcomer-friendly, meaning players will not need a history degree or a deep memory of the first game to understand why a giant demon is swinging a mace at them.

The limited-time demo includes character creation and multiplayer co-op, both of which will carry over to the final experience. For those who manage to conquer the demo's boss, Wuzhiqi, the rewarded Fledgling Phoenix Helmet will be waiting in the full game. Pre-orders are currently live, offering the Creator Goddess Garb set as a digital bonus, alongside a Digital Deluxe Edition packed with the Season Pass, a digital mini soundtrack, and a digital mini art book.

Koei Tecmo is running a player survey alongside the trial, meaning you can officially complain about the boss difficulty directly to the people who designed it. The demo ends on September 30, after which the gates to Changban close until 2027.
