Writing on Xbox Wire, Xbox Wire Editor Mike Nelson detailed how the new toggle seamlessly remapped interface controls for traditional gamepads and Windows handheld devices like the ASUS ROG Ally. World of Warcraft: Forever returns players to the core continents of Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor with updated visual lighting, denser zone content, and brand-new lore. Access to Forever requires no additional purchase beyond a standard active WoW subscription.
The details
Setting up a controller requires checking a single "Gamepad (Alpha)" box in the game's Options menu. Once enabled, the user interface automatically swaps button prompts to match connected gamepads, such as a modern Xbox Wireless Controller. Combat maps abilities to the controller's triggers and bumpers, which cycle through action bars mapped to face buttons to create a rhythmic attack flow.
To manage group play without a physical keyboard, Blizzard built a ping system activated by holding down the right analog stick. Players can send quick contextual commands to party members, including Attack, Warning, On My Way, and Assist. For players running handheld devices like the ASUS ROG Ally, adjusting UI scale via Edit Mode—such as shrinking the chat frame and moving player targets to the bottom of the screen—frees up display space for action.
While Forever mirrors the geography and classic race selections of 2004-era Warcraft, it expands the lore and geography rather than replicating classic servers 1:1. The update introduces the Skyborne, a floating elf race located on the newly uncovered Zephras Isle. Ground explorers can access newly added landmasses across Riverglades and Mount Hyjal, paired with updated environmental lighting across familiar regions.
Class and race combinations also receive an update, allowing players to roll previously unavailable match-ups such as Forsaken Paladins. The goal is keeping the lower-level adventure feeling fresh while retaining the slower, deliberate pacing of early Warcraft.
Official controller integration marks a major shift in accessibility for one of the PC's most historic MMORPGs. As Nelson noted, "Blizzard wants to make sure there’s a WoW experience that suits everybody," pointing to past features like Text to Speech and Single-Button Assistant. Native gamepad mapping allows existing players to take dungeons to the couch or handhelds without relying on complex third-party software bindings.
