After a marquee Activision launch left Microsoft's own hardware invisible on Metacritic scoreboards, Xbox technical leaders are revamping how press receive pre-release games.
The short version
Xbox Chief Technology Officer Scott Van Vliet announced an overhaul of the platform's review distribution system. The move follows a controversy where Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launched with no official Xbox score on Metacritic due to code distribution friction.

Microsoft is redesigning how Xbox review access works following public confusion over missing launch reviews for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Xbox Chief Technology Officer Scott Van Vliet confirmed in an October 28 post on X. Activision's flagship shooter launched October 23 with aggregated scores on every other platform — and no official Metacritic score on Xbox hardware.

"Reviewing a game on XBOX takes too many steps today," Van Vliet wrote. "Press and creators should be able to redeem and play, and that's what the team is ultimately building toward. The first updates are coming soon."
The details
The gap went public on October 27, when the official Call of Duty account posted a celebratory graphic touting the game's launch reception: a Metacritic 89 on Nintendo Switch 2, 88 on PlayStation, and 87 on PC. Conspicuously absent was any score for Xbox — the platform owned by the company that owns Activision.
As reported by Windows Central, almost no critics had native Xbox access ahead of release. Where PlayStation, Steam, and Switch 2 distribution means redeeming a digital code, Xbox access adds a step: reviewers supply their console ID so the publisher can register the hardware before a code will work. Many Xbox-focused outlets simply review on PC instead. Game Rant, one of only two outlets with a counted Xbox Series X score at launch, awarded the game a 10/10.
Van Vliet's statement frames the fix as an active technical priority: kill the manual registration and bring Xbox review fulfillment in line with the standard key redemption every rival storefront has used for years. No feature list or date yet beyond "soon" — though the review codes that started flowing within hours suggest the short-term fix was a phone call.
Metacritic and OpenCritic aggregates shape visibility and perception in a launch window. When a major release under Microsoft's own umbrella posts scores on Switch 2 but not on Xbox, the blind spot is self-inflicted — and for once, the platform holder agrees.
