TL;DR — what matters
• Xal'atath announced as first new playable hero in nearly six years
• Arrives on live servers September 28, following PTR test next weekend
• Blizzard states future heroes are possible depending on player reception
Xal’atath — New playable hero added to the roster, themed after WoW's Midnight expansion.
What it means for the meta
This is the first major content addition to the game since Hogger in December 2020, potentially restarting development.
Blizzard Entertainment is adding Xal’atath to Heroes of the Storm on September 28, the company announced at BlizzCon 2026. For a game that has spent the last several years in a state of quiet retirement, the sudden arrival of a new character feels less like a standard patch and more like finding a heartbeat in a museum exhibit.

The Harbinger of the Void will hit the game's Public Test Realm (PTR) next weekend, according to Blizzard, and is currently playable for those attending BlizzCon. Crucially, the studio indicated this might not be a one-time novelty. Depending on how players respond to the release, Blizzard stated it may consider adding additional heroes to the roster in the future.
The details
Xal’atath is the first new character to join the roster since Hogger's release in December 2020, which arrived roughly a year after Blizzard officially halted active development on the game. World of Warcraft players will recognize her as a major player in the MMO's recent Midnight expansion, making her arrival a direct bridge to Blizzard's active properties.
Originally launched in 2015 as Blizzard's cross-franchise answer to the MOBA boom, Heroes of the Storm brought together characters from Warcraft, StarCraft, Diablo, and Overwatch. However, it struggled to capture the same market share as competitors like League of Legends or Dota 2. By 2018, the studio had drastically scaled back development resources, eventually leaving the game to survive on minor balance adjustments and bug fixes.
Whether this release translates into a full-scale revival remains to be seen. In 2018, the scaling back of development came alongside the cancellation of the game's official esports programs, leaving a dedicated but reduced community to keep the matchmaking queues populated. This update marks the first sign of concrete reinvestment in that community since the active content pipeline dried up in late 2020.
Heroes of the Storm remains available for Mac and Windows PC, and Xal’atath will join the live servers on Sept. 28.
Adding a new character to a legacy MOBA is an active choice to reinvest in a product that many assumed was permanently set in stone. In a genre where live-service games are typically either fully funded or quietly shuttered, Blizzard is testing a third path—re-entering active development years after the final whistle seemed to blow.
Will Xal'atath bring you back to the Nexus?
