Kernel Hearts: Argentine Culture Meets Magical Girl Action on Xbox

Argentine developer Ephemera Games has launched its stylized action RPG Kernel Hearts on Xbox, blending magical girl combat with the snappy loop of a roguelite. The title tasks players with scaling a dangerous tower, battling angelic entities to save a dying world—which is exactly the kind of beautiful, dramatic ruin we love to see.

In a post on Xbox Wire, Whitethorn Games Media Manager Katie White outlined how the project blends Japanese-inspired JRPG tropes with the distinct flavor of Argentine culture. Players will find characters referencing their roots, such as the protagonist Fernet drinking yerba mate during idle animations, set against a backdrop of a post-apocalyptic Patagonia.

Why the shift to roguelite runs?

The game's structure was born from a desire to modernize the classic JRPG experience. Game Director Akira noted that while long, sprawling JRPGs hold a special place for the developers, player schedules change over time. To combat this, the studio paired a heavy, character-driven story with bite-sized runs.

The design philosophy relies heavily on expressive gameplay. According to Akira, players should be able to watch a few seconds of combat and immediately understand a character's personality through their rhythm, silhouette, and movement.
