"Today we’re excited to finally confirm that Metro 2039 launches February 4 2027," Robbie Cooke, Head of Brand at 4A Games, wrote in the announcement. The studio showcased the debut console footage captured specifically on the PlayStation 5 Pro to highlight how the sequel handles its bleak environments.
The sequel shifts focus to a new protagonist known as "The Stranger," a former Spartan warrior who has ventured out of the metro tunnels onto the surface of a thawing Moscow. According to 4A Games, players will navigate radiation hazards and hostile outposts using customizable gear, including a silenced Shatun rifle and a Duplet shotgun.
The details
The developer describes Metro 2039 as a solo, story-driven first-person shooter. While previous entries focused on different survivors, this outing centers on a protagonist who left his squad behind. Cooke noted that while the character's Spartan armor might paint him as a hero to some, "he's far worse than that."
Gameplay tasks players with searching for a Novoreich fortress inside a dam. Every step on the thawing surface presents a hazard, from radiation pockets to crumbling apartment complexes. Survival requires managing equipment and utilizing stealth tools, molotovs, and environmental cover to navigate hostile encounters.
The game is built on the proprietary 4A Engine, which the studio previously used for its upgraded version of Metro Exodus. 4A Games confirmed that both the standard PlayStation 5 and the PlayStation 5 Pro will run Metro 2039 at a smooth 60fps with ray tracing enabled, utilizing a dedicated Performance Mode.
Securing a concrete release date nearly three years in advance gives the studio a clear runway, while offering Sony a major first-person showcase for its mid-generation hardware. By focusing its initial gameplay reveal on the PlayStation 5 Pro, 4A Games is positioning the sequel as a primary demonstrator for console ray-tracing capabilities heading into 2027.
