Goron City and the Lost Woods

Death Mountain Trail, Goron City, the Lost Woods route to Saria's Song, 2 Pieces of Heart, 5 Gold Skulltulas, bigger bags and the Goron Bracelet.

Updated Nov 6, 2026. Unofficial guide by Nexzy.

This page has story spoilers (Inside the Deku Tree).

Climb Death Mountain to Goron City. The Gorons' boss, Darunia, has the Spiritual Stone of Fire, but he's in no mood to talk. Cheering him up takes a song, and that song is deep in the Lost Woods, so this chapter loops back toward home before you get the Goron Bracelet.

Death Mountain Trail

Wear the Hylian Shield from here on. It's slower and you have to stand still to block, but it stops everything, fire included.

  • Red Tektites pounce from above and bounce off your shield. Stab them while they recover.
  • Clear them and climb the mesh wall to a ledge by a blocked cave. A hungry Goron tells you their food comes from Dodongo's Cavern, which is sealed now, and sends you up to Goron City.
  • A Goron rolls down the path. He can't hurt you but he'll knock you over.
  • The trail to the summit is blocked by boulders, so take the sharp left into the tunnel to Goron City.
  • A Goron outside is watching a Bomb Flower. Bomb Flowers explode soon after you pick them up, and you're not strong enough yet.
  • In a small alcove right of the city entrance, a curly-leaf plant sits next to Fairy Writing: strong weather might make the leaves spin. Remember that.

Goron City

The city is built in rings around a deep pit, with Darunia's room at the very bottom.

  1. Go right and cross the rope bridges to the altar. A Goron says someone took the "tasty red stone" and Boss Darunia has shut himself in his room. That's the Spiritual Stone of Fire.
  2. Rocks block most of the city. Head down a level past a rolling Goron who won't stop, then one more level to a Goron listening to music through a crack in the wall.
  3. Across that level, a Goron who's never seen green things says Deku Sticks are rare here because they're used to light Bomb Flowers. Check the pots next to him for one.
  4. At the bottom, past the giant Goron-shaped pot, there are two sealed doors. Stand on the Triforce mat and play Zelda's Lullaby to get in to see Darunia.

Darunia is furious: a beast has taken over Dodongo's Cavern and cut off their food and the Bomb Flowers. He won't help until you improve his mood.

Use Darunia's torches

The Goron outside says Big Brother has a favorite song, but his humming is hard to follow. You've already heard it through that cracked wall. Darunia's room has two lit torches, so carry fire out with a Deku Stick:

  1. Light a stick and run to the Bomb Flower by the sealed door next door. It blows open the Goron Shop. Nothing there is useful yet: bombs and an adult-size Goron Tunic.
  2. Light a stick again and run around the giant pot, lighting all four torches. The pot starts spinning: come back to it later. Put the stick away so it doesn't burn out.
  3. Light a stick from the pot's torches, go up a level to the cracked wall with the music, and light the Bomb Flowers there. It opens a shortcut into the Lost Woods.

Through the Lost Woods to Saria

Kaepora Gaebora meets you and says the song comes from the Sacred Forest Meadow.

How the maze works: listen at each tunnel. If the music stays (and you see notes as you go through), it's the right way. If it fades, it's wrong, and you end up back at the start or in Kokiri Forest.

Route from the Goron City shortcut:

  1. Left (east).
  2. Left again at the area with the pool.
  3. Straight through the four-way crossing.
  4. Left at the area with a single boulder.
  5. Right at the next single-boulder area.

Sacred Forest Meadow

  1. Wolfos: it circles you and lunges with two claw swipes. Blocking just bounces it back. Instead, backflip away when it lunges. After the second swipe it overreaches and shows the scar on its back: jump attack it. Repeat until the gate opens.
  2. Mad Scrubs in the zig-zag maze fire three nuts at a time. Shield up and the third nut bounces back into them. Follow the path around the big square with water holes in the corners.
  3. On the last narrow path, snipe the Scrubs from range with the slingshot.
  4. At the top of the stairs, Saria is playing. She teaches you Saria's Song: R, A, Y, R, A, Y. Play it anywhere to talk to her: her tips change depending on where you are.
  5. On the way down, check the gap in the big walls at the bottom for a hole. It drops into a Fairy Fountain: heal up, or catch a fairy in a bottle. A bottled fairy brings you back when you fall.

Lost Woods extras

  • Skull Kid (Piece of Heart): from the woods entrance, go left. Stand on the small stump and play Saria's Song with the Skull Kid for a Piece of Heart.
  • Skull Mask: wear it in front of him and he wants to buy it, but he only pays 10 Rupees, less than the shop charges. Keep it until you've visited the Forest Stage below.
  • Bigger Deku Stick Bag: drop into the ravine under the Kokiri Forest bridge and cross to the far side. Beat the Business Scrub and it sells you the bag for 40 Rupees (holds 20 sticks). Worth it.
  • Biggest Deku Seed Bag: from the entrance, follow the music right. Before you jump down, stand on the stump by the big tree-ring target and hit dead center three times. A Scrub gives you the bag (holds 50).
  • Skull Kids' memory game: below the target, two Skull Kids play on stumps. Join them and repeat their tunes. Round 1 (3 to 5 notes): Blue Rupee. Round 2 (4 to 6 notes): Red Rupee. Round 3 (6 to 8 notes): Piece of Heart. The note positions on screen help when they hide which ones to remember.
  • Forest Stage: from the Goron City shortcut area, go right to the pool, left heading north, then left again into a meadow full of Business Scrubs (block them to shop; one sells bugs). A hole hidden in the bushes drops to the Forest Stage. Stand on the platform wearing a mask and the Scrubs judge it: a prize, or an attack. Wear the Skull Mask and a big Scrub gives you the Biggest Deku Stick Bag. You can borrow the mask again if you already sold it.

Bring bugs in bottles for the soft soil spots.

  1. Kokiri Forest: take a wrong turn in the Lost Woods to get back home. Soft soil behind the Kokiri Shop.
  2. Kokiri Forest, night: use the Sun's Song if you need to. On the treehouse wall behind the Know-It-All Brothers' house, by the Training Ground.
  3. Above the Kokiri bridge: from the Skull Kid's clearing, take the south tunnel to a high ledge over the bridge. Soft soil.
  4. Business Scrub meadow: soft soil by the large tree at the back.
  5. Dodongo's Cavern entrance: soft soil just inside the tunnel once it's open.

Cheer up Darunia

Take the shortcut back to Goron City and play Saria's Song for Darunia. He can't stop dancing. Once he calms down he listens: he won't just hand over the Spiritual Stone of Fire, but he'll consider it if you clear the monsters out of Dodongo's Cavern. He gives you the Goron Bracelet so you can pick up Bomb Flowers.

  • Try it out: on the top ring of the city, east of the entrance, pick up the Bomb Flowers next to the cracked walls, throw them with R and step back. Blow open a few walls to reach Medigoron, a huge Goron working on a weapon that won't be ready for years.
  • Open Dodongo's Cavern: back on the trail, pick up the Bomb Flower the Goron is guarding and throw it over the ledge onto the cracked boulder below. The entrance opens.
