Tip
New in the remake: time stands still on your first trip across Hyrule Field and the Castle Town drawbridge stays down, so there's no rush to beat nightfall until you've met the Princess. The new Threads of Time quest log lists every main and side quest, done or open. Check it whenever you're not sure what's next.
Hyrule Field
The owl Kaepora Gaebora lands as you reach the field. He points you northwest along the road to Hyrule Castle and Castle Town, and tells you about the Threads of Time.
Lake Hylia is to the south and Gerudo Valley is to the far west, but you'll come back for both. Follow the road north. Peahats spin at you with blade leaves: block with your shield, then hit them while they're stunned. Cross the drawbridge into town.
Hyrule Castle Town
Guard room (right inside the gate): break every pot for about 20 Rupees. The guard doesn't care.
Two men laughing at the fountain: one of them tried to see the Princess and got stuck in a drainpipe. Remember that.
Bazaar (east): sells the Hylian Shield. It's fireproof but pricey, and you can get one another way.
Potion Shop (next to the Bazaar): a golden bug is loose inside. The owner gives you an Empty Bottle: equip it and press ZR next to the bug. He fills the bottle with a Red Potion (full hearts).
Happy Mask Shop: closed for now.
Temple of Time: up the path past the Potion Shop. It guards the door to the Sacred Realm, which needs all three Spiritual Stones.
Shooting Gallery: 10 Rupees for 15 seeds and 10 targets. Hit 8 or 9 and you get a free retry. Hit all 10 for the Bigger Deku Seed Bag (holds 40). The Expert Course pays 30 Rupees for each perfect run after that.
Closed for now: Bombchu Bowling, the Bombchu Shop and the Treasure Chest Shop. A man in town buys bugs and fish in bottles.
Take the road up the hill to the castle.
Hyrule Castle gate
Kaepora Gaebora warns you the guards won't let a kid in, and the gate guard sends you away. By the milk cart on the right of the road, Malon of Lon Lon Ranch is waiting for her dad, Talon, who's probably asleep somewhere. Say you'll help and she gives you the Weird Egg.
Past the drain next to the cart, climb the green vines to a high ledge. The eye-shaped stone there (a Sheikah Stone) tells you the time when you hit it. Climb the next vines to the top of the gatehouse and look over the front gardens.
Sneak through the front gardens
The guards here stand still, but if one sees you he throws you out.
Either jump the iron fence and hide in the bushes before the nearest guard sees you, or take the road and veer left through the purple flowers before the bend.
Weave through the hedges using the middle path.
Go around the outside and climb the west wall to get past the big locked gate.
Pass another Sheikah Stone and jump into the moat. Swim to the tree on the far side to skip the two guards. Note the odd plant by the tree: you can't use it yet.
Up the path, Talon is asleep. By now your Weird Egg has hatched into a Wake-Up Cucco. Equip it and press ZR next to him. He wakes up and runs home, leaving his milk crates behind.
The drainpipe from the fountain story is right here, but it's too high. Pull both crates to the ledge and push them down into the gap one after the other, so the second lands on top of the first. Climb up and crawl through.
Castle courtyard
This part is a stealth run. Get spotted and you're sent back to the drainpipe, not out of the castle.
Gazebo: climb the ladder to see the layout. One guard stands under the gazebo. Climb the stacked crates on one side and walk across the beam over his head.
Two hedges: two guards walk left and right between them, but neither reaches the right edge of his hedge. When the first one turns away, run to the right side of the first hedge and hide. Once the second guard heads left, run to the second hedge, then on to the next area.
Guards stop and look your way if you get close to their view. That throws off their timing, so watch for it.
Cellar with shelves: one guard walks a counter-clockwise loop around the shelves, another stands between them and looks left and right. Go down the stairs once the walking guard has passed and turned away. Fast route: up the left side while the middle guard looks right, beating the walker to the corner. Safe route: follow the walking guard at a distance.
Leave by the far door and turn left into the garden.
Hyrule Field: on the dirt path from the forest, look west for a tall, thin tree on a hilltop overlooking the ranch. Cross the stream and roll into it. Thin trees like this one drop things when you roll into them, big twisted ones don't.
Castle Town guard room: roll into the big crates at the far end, next to the guard.
Castle front gardens: before you climb the west wall, check the small fenced corner on the right with barrels and sacks. Roll into the thin tree there.

Tip
Switch 2 microphone: in the settings you can play ocarina songs by humming or with a real instrument, and the console's mic picks it up.
